Helping Yourself

February 12, 2008 – 7:02 am

If you are a man, you probably don’t want to rely on anybody when it comes to you mental health. Although this is quite unhelpful, there are a few ways to help yourself:

  • Talk about yourself, if not to a doctor, to a friend or relative, don’t just bottle things up.
  • Exercise - Try to keep yourself active, get out of the house, even for a short period of time.
  • Go to bed at a decent hour and sleep at least 7 hours/night. If you can’t sleep, don’t get upset, try watching some TV or listen to the radio for a while.
  • Eat properly - you should eat lots of fruit and vegetables, keep your body and mind fit and healthy. Even if you are not hungry, you should have a balanced diet, so eat 3 times/day.
  • No more alcohol or drugs - you may feel better for a short period, but it will make you more depressed in the long run.
  • Get a hobby, do something you truly enjoy.
  • At work - Don’t drive yourself too hard, set some realistic targets and reduce your workload.
  • Go on a vacation, take a break from the daily routine.
